For the Makers review, July 2014

Name: For the Makers
Details: Every month, receive a box filled with the materials you'll need to make four jewelry and fashion projects.
Price: $29

The theme of this month's For the Makers shipment is "Makena." It's an African-inspired collection with plenty of bright colors and natural materials. I'll start this blog entry by showing you what I received; then, I'll post photos from the For the Makers website to show you what the finished products look like.

And here's what I'll be making:

1. Dory pinch pot. This is a cute piece made from wood and bright orange paint. I have so many random tchotchkes and pieces of jewelry around my house, that I'm sure this little guy will come in handy.

2. West Cape hoops. These are cute, but not really my style. I'm pretty sure that I'd be swatting those tassels away from my neck at every opportunity. Maybe I'll make these earrings without the tassels, or give them away to a more fashion-forward friend.

3. Sapeurs bangles. I really like these! They're made from a bright African print, and I bet they'll look really cute with a basic outfit, like a white tank top and jeans.

4. Zozo eye pillow. Good gosh, I need this right about now. This pillow is filled with chamomile and lavender (one of my favorite scents!) and is meant to help induce calm. The past few weeks have been a little nuts in my neck of the woods, so this might have to be the first project that I complete from the Makena collection.

----------

Once again, I loved my For the Makers shipment! As they are every month, the materials with which to make the projects are extremely high quality. It's obvious that the folks at For the Makers put a lot of thought into selecting and designing their projects. Can't wait to get started!

For the Makers review, June 2014

Name: For the Makers
Details: Every month, receive a box filled with the materials you'll need to make four jewelry and fashion projects.
Price: $29

Wow, I just realized that I haven't posted any reviews in a week! It's a been a busy few days, with work and Father's Day, plus the fact that my laptop is "in the shop." (Fun fact: it's never a good sign when the power cord starts smoking.) Anyway, I'm back with several boxes to review, so I'll get started with For the Makers.

This month's collection is called "Honey Nectar," and, according to the FTM website, features a luxury metal look.

Here are all the goodies that I'll be making.

And here are the products with which I'll be making them.

The projects are:

1. Wild pollen lip balm. I'm excited about this! I've never made lip balm (or any bath/body project), so I'm intrigued to see how my version turns out. The project involves beeswax and stovetops and real honey, and it sounds fantastic.

2. Foxtail twist scarf. I LOVE the color of this scarf...it's a pretty, coppery hue. I don't know whether it will stay put in my hair, which tends to laugh at attempts to contain it, but I'll be giving this scarf a shot.

3. Linden ring. Love this ring, too! The peach rhinestone is such a pretty color. For the Makers did a great job naming this collection, because everything in it makes me think of honey and nectar.

4. Marmalade bracelet. The last piece in the collection is a winner, too! I'm sure I'll look just as glamorous as the model does when I wear it while drinking a glass of sangria.

----------

I loved this month's For the Makers collection. The last few shipments that I've received from the company have been especially inventive and beautiful, so For the Makers is becoming one of the boxes that I most look forward to receiving every month!

For the Makers review, May 2014

For the Makers is a subscription service that, every month, sends out four crafts centered around a particular theme. The theme this month was "Toketee," which, according to the FtM website, is "a stripped down collection of earthy stones, glittered with gold accents that echo a midsummer night sky." The vibe that I get from it is a southwestern U.S./Native American ethos. I was really excited to see what the collection contained, so I couldn't wait to open the box.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the package was the tea towel that you see above. It has a "rustic" look to it, and is so soft. The box was off to a GREAT start.

I've grabbed photos from the For the Makers website to illustrate each of the projects; that's because I figure that seeing the finished items will help you understand them better than would me posting a photo of random art supplies grouped together.

1. Little Point Earrings. I love the delicacy of these earrings, and think that they'll be a great look for summer.

2. Tasi Wall Hooks. These are cute, but I'm not sure how my husband will feel about me installing random hooks on a wall of our house. I'll just have to do it when he's not around ;)

3. Nebi Ladder Necklace. At first, I wasn't sure whether or not I liked this necklace, but the more I look at it, the more I dig it. I think it'll be cute with a tank top and jeans.

4. Confetti Trail Tea Towel. Love this! As I mentioned earlier, the material from which the tea towel is made has an interesting, textured-yet-soft, feel that reminds me of old-timey fabrics. I probably won't ever use this as a towel because I won't want to get it dirty, but I'm sure that I'll find some other use for it.

I was really happy with the Toketee collection this month. I liked the mix of jewelry and non-jewelry craft items, and thought the aesthetic that For the Makers chose for this month's shipment was beautiful. For the Makers review, April 2014

For the Makers is a subscription service that, every month, sends you the materials to make four jewelry and fashion projects. Each shipment revolves around a particular theme, which, this month, was "Soft Focus." The four projects in my April box took their inspiration from the changing seasons by incorporating pastel colors and a sort of dewy, April-showers-bring-May-flowers aesthetic.

I LOVE breaking into a new subscription box to see what I'll find inside. The suspense!

Above are the projects in this month's shipment. The materials are below:

 "Oh yeah!"

I haven't yet completed any of these projects, so to describe them, I'll use photos that I grabbed from the For the Makers website.

1. Andie gem necklace. This photo doesn't show the necklace very well. I tried to take a picture of the purple and white gems myself, but they're so teeny-tiny and delicate that the photos didn't capture good images. The gems are very cute, though, and I love simple, delicate jewelry, so this will be a fun project to make, and one that I'll definitely wear.

2. Heather stationery. Sad to say, but I'm one of those people who doesn't send out hand-written letters very often. Maybe now is a good time to start. This stationery is painted using Kool-Aid, which gives it a watercolor-like appearance. I'm not super-excited about the project, as I have a feeling that my efforts will end up creating stationery that looks like it was finger-painted by a kindergartner. Still, though, I might give it a try. (Or maybe I'll just make a few pitchers of Kool-Aid instead!)

3. Whitney bracelets. As I mentioned, I like delicate jewelry, and though I don't typically wear bracelets, I can definitely see myself incorporating these into my wardrobe. They're made from silver tubes threaded through with silk thread. It's a perfect look for summer, and one that I can't wait to try.

4. Beau hanging planter. I think this is my favorite project in the box. Essentially, it's a bell cup that you dye with Kool-Aid, then hang up with knotted twine. I love using plants as decor, and I think this will look really cute dangling above the other foliage we have in our family room's "plant corner."

----------

For the Makers is such a fun subscription box. I love to "get crafty," and I find that it's easier to discover new projects when all the materials to make them are sent right to my door. (Plus, home delivery keeps me out of Joann Fabrics, where I could probably spend all day and spend way too much money as a result.) This was my second For the Makers shipment, and while I wasn't altogether impressed with my first shipment (it contained primarily neon-hued jewelry and accessories, and neon just isn't my thing), I was very happy with this one. I'm excited to see what next month brings!
